KOKOROKO (meaning ‘to be strong’ in Urhobo) is a London-based collective of young musicians united by a love for traditional Afrobeat, and led by trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Gray.
In November 2020 Kokoroko released a brilliant new single, the rousing ‘Baba Ayoola’, released by Brownswood Recordings on November 13, 2020, and extracted from the sublime ‘Carry Me Home’, which received significant support and coverage from BBC 6 Music, 1Xtra , Afropunk, Clash and NPR.
The vocal harmonies of the frontwomen Sheila, Cassie and Richie are exhilarating and blend perfectly with the percussive heartbeat of the song. Enchanting guitar riffs meet a melodic bass line, enriched by the powerful brass section that combines with gospel harmonies.
Baba Ayoola is a tribute to the grandfather of the band’s alto saxophonist, Cassie Kinoshi.
It is a real invitation to celebrate life.
Winners of the “Best Group” at the Urban Music Awards 2020 and included in the NPR Austin 100 list, the band KOKOROKO has toured among the major English and European festivals such as Glastonbury, Meltdown, We Out Here and BBC6 Music Festival, to name a few.
In September 2020 they made their BBC Promos debut in the famous Royal Albert Hall.
